Dr. McGwire was a colleague of my father, John Mertens. My dad was a dentist in Claremont just starting out when he met Dr. McGwire. Dr. McGwire was also instrumental in helping my mother, Mary Ann Mertens, connect with Mark to work to raise awareness about smokeless tobacco use in Major League Baseball. My father wishes to express his heartfelt condolences to the family. Dr. McGwire was a great man and he will be missed.

To the McGuire family...
Dr. McGuire was our family's dentist our whole life... even some of my neices and nephew. He was the Worlds Best dentist. He took pride in his patients, always kind and loving.
I remember always being so excited after my visit, walking down to the end of the hallway to get a toy from the treasure chest. Rest in peace Dr. McGuire with all the angels in heaven. Prayers to Mrs. McGuire and his children.
