John “Jack” Medeiros, 73, of 273 Peckham Street, Fall River, MA, died on July 25th at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston after a long illness. He was the husband of Maria D. (Cavaco) Medeiros. He was a son of the late John S. and Mary (Rodrigues) Medeiros.

He was a 1954 graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School, Taunton and a 1958 graduate of Bradford Durfee Technical Institute (now University of Massachusetts Dartmouth). Jack spent the early part of his career working as a designer for Balfour and Levens, jewelry manufacturing companies in Attleboro. He was also the art director at The Robbins Company. In 1969, he started John Medeiros Advertising-Art-Public Relations, which he operated until his retirement in the mid 2000’s.

Jack was a lifelong resident of this city and throughout his life was an active member of the Fall River Community. He had been a member of the National Guard in the late 1950’s. In 1963, he was appointed to the Welfare Board by then Mayor Roland Desmaris. He was elected to the City Council in 1969 and served until 1995, having the distinction of the longest period served on the council in the city’s history. He also served as vice president of the council for two terms.

Jack was a founding member of the We Love Children Fund. He had also served on the boards of the King Philip Community House and PYCO.

He was a passionate fan of Big Band music, especially the Glen Miller Orchestra and was an avid Red Sox fan throughout his life. He was a parishioner of the former Our Lady of the Angels Church and is presently a member of St. Stanislaus Church.

In addition to his wife of 43 years, he is survived by his daughter, Joan M. Medeiros and his son and daughter-in-law, John “Jack”Jr and Michele, all of Fall River. He was the proud grandfather of Carley, Rachel, Leah and Kathryn.

His funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME, 2064 South Main St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church, Rockland St. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Calling hours Tuesday 4-8 p.m.

Jack was a very dedicated citizen and gave much more to his city and state than they gave to him.
He was a good, honest man. And I feel very sure he is safely back in the arms
of Almighty God!

My prayers are with you at this time. I recall many times when Jack would be supportuve of many of my community projects. I always appreciated his love and concern for the people and places of our city of Fall River.
