John Miller Obituary

John Allen Miller Jr. of Chalfont John Allen Miller Jr. of Chalfont died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, November 17th after a day filled with golf, spinning and visits with friends. John died peacefully of a Brain AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation). Born, April 14, 1951, John was the son of the late John and Patricia (Conver) Miller. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Wendy (Dodson) Miller; his twin sons Mark (Anne) of Shrewsbury, MA and Russell (Christine) of Trappe, PA; three grandchildren Benjamin, Lauren and Fiona; his sister Colleen Fortner (Miller), as well as many family and friends. John was a 1969 graduate of North Penn High School and earned a Masters Degree in Early Education from Millersville University. He excelled in track and field at both the high school and collegiate levels. He shared his love of track & field by coaching at C.B. West, DelVal College, and mentoring his son and his teammates at the University of Hartford. He continued his love of running by competing in the Bucks 5K series, Broad Street Run, and various Duathlons alongside his wife. For many years John was also a Boston Marathon volunteer. He taught 36 years in CB school district. He started as the first male kindergarten teacher for the district and spent the following 35 years at Titus Elementary school teaching 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades. Many of his students will remember him for his iconic white mustache, festive ties, and witty jokes. John and his family were active members of Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church. He especially enjoyed his involvement with the adult mission trips building homes for those in need and spending time with his small group. In retirement, John spent time working at Pine Crest Golf course and was a member of their men’s golf league and couples league. He discovered his joy of cycling after joining Team OX, a cycle team focused on fundraising for Multiple Sclerosis. John also led many Doylestown Scenic Stroll walks promoting good health to members of the community. John and his wife enjoyed traveling the world experiencing different cultures near and far. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his two sons, many spin classes at Cornerstone gym and spending time with his family. John donated his organs though the Gift of Life program. Please pray for the many recipients and their families. Friends and family are invited to attend his Celebration of Life Service, 11:30 AM, Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church, 321 W. As an educator we talk about those who influenced us or made an impact in our lives. Mr Miller was undoubtedly one of those teachers. He brought creativity, laughter and enjoyment into the classroom. I am so fortunate to have had Mr. Miller as my 6th grade teacher. He impacted my life and I can only hope to be half the educator he was. He was truly an amazing man who led and taught by example. Prayers are with the Miller family.

I had the privilege of having Mr. Miller as my third and sixth grade teacher many years ago. I still remember his kind smile and caring ways. He was silly when we needed a laugh and also expected the best from us as students. I remember him being so excited to have us make fish print t-shirts using real fish!!! I still have a pencil he gave all of us at Christmas time. And his famous response to our question "Can I go to the bathroom?" was "I don't know, can you?". Mr. Miller was an inspiration to all his students. His students looked up to him with the highest respect. And he was one of the amazing teachers that I had as a child that inspired me to become a teacher too!! A wonderful, caring man who will be missed by all those he touched in so many ways over the years! My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

I had Mr. Miller as a teacher in 1989-1990 when his "iconic white mustache" was an more of an iconic grey mustache. My favorite memory happened the year after 6th grade, when I had gone to Unami for 7th grade. Mr. Miller showed up at my house one evening to see how everything was going. He knew I had trouble in math and wanted to see how I was getting along in math. The only teacher who ever came to my house! I was shocked, but also so flattered that he remembered me and cared enough to check in. Now I am a teacher (in high school) and if I can have a fraction of the impact on a student he had on me, that will be a successful career. Gone but never forgotten!

Wendy and family,

I am so sorry for your loss of such a wonderful man. My one silly memory of John is when he used to complain about Wendy hanging the washing out in good weather. He would say stiff underwear time again.
I had the privilege of being John and Wendy's neighbor for many years. He will be greatly missed.
