John served as a staff member at Boy Scout camp Cedar Valley 1953 - 1954, Hardy,AR; taught bird study merit badge taking scouts out at 5 am plus
other counselor duties. Had a great
spirit & was very much liked by all.
We kept in touch since then & his upbeat personality & writing skills will always be remembered by this long time friend .

He used to run me down in the hallways when I was in my second year grad school because I was doing research on Indians even though it was a few centuries back from what he did. He was very nice. I'm very sorry he's gone.

He used to run me down in the hallway my second year of grad school. "Who are you researching? Can I help?" It was always a "no" but I remember him fondly.

Unbelievable man and amazing life. Gave so much to so many. I was lucky enough to be one of his students many years ago. His work will live on for generations. Thoughts and prayers with his family.

Dedicated, engaged scholar who used anthropology to advocate for marginalized community members. He will be deeply missed. My sympathies to his family and friends.
