John, you were a tireless scientist and ambassador of good will in developing countries. You, more than most, took an interest in my international work in potato production and inspired me to do bigger and better things. May you rest in peace...

I was saddened to learn this morning of John's passing. He had an amazing life and truly was a giant in the field of plant pathology, who never can be replaced. He was extremely encouraging to new members of the field, and I will always remember his help and kindness when I was first beginning to work on Phytophthora. The world has lost a great resource who will be sorely missed.

Thank you John for your vision, enthusiasm and encouragement. You have given me the example I needed of why we believe in people and our worthy profession.
