John O'Meara Obituary

John O'Meara

On Monday Nov. 6, 2023, John Joseph O'Meara, of St. Simons Island, passed away peacefully with his wife of 35 years by his side; he was 82 years old.

Mr. O'Meara is survived by his devoted wife, Linda; his son, Joe O'Meara (Chansemone); daughter, Kristin Blake; grandson, Austin Blake; sister, Kathy Fryer; brother, Father Frank O'Meara, OP; and stepdaughters, Elise Reed and Perri Reed.

He was preceded in death by his mother Frances Claire O'Meara and father Joseph Matthew O'Meara.

John's distinguished career began as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force, where he earned a bronze star for his service in Vietnam. He was legal counsel for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and finished his career as general counsel for the Federal Retirement Thrift Savings Board in Washington, D,C.

Mr. O'Meara will be buried with full military honors at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

It was John's wish that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles for their loving and dedicated care in the final weeks of his life.

John O'Meara embraced an independent spirit guided by the immortal words of William Shakespeare: "To thine own self be true." The memory of his spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all who loved him.

I knew John many years ago when we were house fellows at the University of Wisconsin. He was a wonderful funny smart man. I didn´t know he had passed away. A dear soul. I was lucky to know him.

SAD NEWS FOR ME! Linda called on November 21 to inform me of John's November 6 death. In 1967 during the early stages of the Vietnam War , John and I were USAF air intelligence officers assigned to 7th Air Force headquarters, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Saigon, South Vietnam. John was located in the 7AF reconnaissance technical squadron using aerial photography when he quickly became the leading specialist on the North Vietnamese railroad system originating in China. John's expertise in this area provided major contributions to the USAF "Rolling Thunder" air war over North Vietnam. During this time, John and I were roommates along with four other USAF officers in a private villa in a South Vietnamese residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Saigon. We had good times in this villa where John often took charge of "potluck" dinner using whatever was available, a lot of canned Chef Boyardee ravioli or BBQ steaks "requisitioned" from the Army for a cheap bottle of whiskey. John and I made good friends with two Vietnamese who, on our occasional days off, took us on tours of downtown Saigon. After all these years, special memories of "the best of times and the worst of times" events with John remain in my heart! May God bless you John and may you rest in peace with our Lord, Rollie Sterrett
