Not sure what to say?

Dear Olmsted Family, I am so sorry to learn about the passing of Professor Olmsted. He was one of my favorite teachers at Oberlin. I also considered him a mentor and friend of sorts who truly cared about his students. I have many fond memories of his seminars and lectures but also of the time that we spent chatting during office hours about a wide range of subjects. The Oberlin community was so fortunate to have him as a member. Fond regards and deepest condolences, Jim `90

John was a fellow student in English literature at the University of Western Ontario in the early 60s. He was brilliant and I remember how delighted our professors were to have him in classes. He was also part of a circle of friends, sensitive, kind, with a wry humour. I can imagine how fortunate his students feel to have had him. Condolences to his family.

I'm so very sad to learn of John's passing. He was so influential to me, in so many ways. I first studied Victorian literature with John, and was also first introduced to London in the fall 1989 Oberlin-in-London semester that he co-ran. I owe so much to both, including the decision to go on to complete 6 years of graduate school in the UK. To the 19th-century novel course, I owe my decision to specialize in Victorian literature in my own English professor career. I will always remember...

Professor Olmsted´s lecture on Charles Dickens remains to this day the most memorable academic experience of my four years at Oberlin, reflecting his passion, wisdom and wonderful sense of humor in devotion to his love of literature and his students. Thank you Professor Olmsted, May you Rest In Peace. Geoff Coll `82

John was a dear friend, an admirable colleague, a superb teacher. My condolences to his beloved Olga and to all who cherish his memory.
