A Full Life, and Then Some
John W. Perry was not your typical police officer. He spoke French, Spanish, Swedish and Russian, and was learning Albanian. He was a graduate of New York University School of Law. He ran in three marathons and took part in a swim around Manhattan. He was an extra in Woody Allen films. He volunteered one day a week for the Kings County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He was in the New York State Guard and was a board member in the New York Civil Liberties Union. He collected bulletproof vests from retired police officers and gave them to officers in Moscow.

On the morning of Sept. 11, Mr. Perry was filing his retirement papers at 1 Police Plaza, intent on becoming a medical malpractice lawyer.

When he learned of the attacks, he ran the few blocks to the World Trade Center. Colleagues said he disappeared in the rubble when the south tower collapsed, just moments after he tried to help a woman who had fainted.

"I always wondered why John did so much," said his mother, Patricia Perry. "As a child he was classified as having a learning disability, but he rose above it. He always felt he had something to prove."

Not sure what to say?

I remeber meeting John on the set of KING OF THE JUNGLE, when he and my late husband were working to get their SAG cards (at least I understand John was working on getting his). He and John became friendly and got to work together on a few other films, like MEN IN BLACK II. He was a true friendly, gentle giant both in stature and in personality. I know how hard it is to lose a loved one and hope his family finds solice in the fact that he gave his life helping others.

Read about your story on social media 23 yrs to the day. Amazed by your valour and kind heartedness. With the current state of the world we need more people like you. Rest in Peace John

Miss ya, John. It was so much fun being your friend.

Officer Perry, I learned about you after seeing a memorial plaque for your heroic actions on 9/11. I learned not only of your actions that day, but also your kindness and achievements outside of the NYPD. I’m sure you served my community with grace, and many officers like you are needed. I didn’t even exist on 9/11, and your story still got to me. Thank you Officer Perry, you are my hero.

I just read an article about you in my book you are a true Ameri an Hero Thank you for your Service and sacrifice

Hi, my name is Isaac and I am a Highschool student. My class is learning about the events that occurred during 9/11 and those you lost there life. I received Officer John Perry and I was pleased to learn about Officer Perry. He was brave and courageous man. Even though I wasnt born yet I am grateful for everything he did during 9/11. I realize that he was off duty and preparing to retire. I would have to say that choosing to go and put your life at risk to save others is a pretty heroic act....

I knew John for several years. During the 19670's & 1980's, I was a police officer in the Emergency Service Unit. My side gig was as a "stunt man". We first met on a movie" SET". John told me he was an attorney in the Dept's Advocates Office. Truly NOT my favorite folks, but John was a different breed. Truly a good person. We became friendly, and I was able to refer him to several Movie & T.V. auditions. Rest in Peace My Friend....

In Memory with
Honor & Respect.

For you, sir, I stand. I swore my Oath of Office with TSA with you and the others whom sacrificed everything that fateful day foremost in my mind. I shall never forget that day, nor shall I ever fail in my charge or duty--to prevent such tragedies from ever again befalling our people; and to never forget.

That cadre with whom I swore my oath received cards inscribed with a name of someone taken that day. It is for you that we stand united and in remembrance.
