From the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s tributes to those who died in the Oct. 1, 2017 music festival shooting:

John Phippen, a 56-year-old father of six from Santa Clarita, California, was among those killed in the Route 91 Harvest festival shooting, his son, Travis Phippen, confirmed Wednesday.

The two were attending the concert together. Travis Phippen was shot in the arm during the Sunday night attack that killed 58 and wounded more than 520.

A GoFundMe page was created for the Phippen family by longtime neighbors and friends, Leah and Paul Nagyivanyi.

John Phippen was an assistant scout master, father, and a brother in Christ. We went on several backpacking trips and one huge backpacking father and son trip in 1993. His booming voice could be heard as he sang up-lifting spiritual songs as the fathers and boys hiked the difficult trails.
After the Northridge earthquake he put in our central heating and air on our shoestring budget without batting an eye. He was always a positive soul who looked out for everyone he knew.
