The world is bleaker without John's decency, grace, vigor, intelligence, and insight brightening the canvas. However, the brushstrokes of his life live on in each of us fortunate enough to have known and worked with him.

He was exceedingly accomplished . . . yet not in the least haughty;
He was kind and caring.
He saw hope for me, despite my lack of philosophical background.
He was demanding . . . yet encouraging.
he is clearly one of my top ten teachers EVer in terms of skill and support and demanding.
VU was wise to hire and keep him.
I miss him.
And I second Gray Cox's comments (and glad to see that he is flouring.

He was a very gifted teacher and rigorous scholar who could give and inspire mutual respect across extremely wide philosophical divides. I learned an incredible amount from him -- really fundamental things about logic and analytic philosophy that would have likely not been accessible to me without his help. I also learned a lot about how to be cheerful in the face of adversity and generous and supportive of students.
