John Pridgen Obituary

PRIDGEN John Randall Pridgen, age 74, died March 10, 2017. Born in Jacksonville on August 21, 1942, he was the son of Colyar Puett (C.P.) Pridgen and Ruth Johnson Pridgen. After graduating from Florida State University School of Business in 1964, he spent six months' active duty in the Army Reserve. The same year, he joined James and Harris CPA as a staff accountant. In 1969, he earned certification through the State of Florida, Board of Accountancy, and became a partner in the firm. He was a member of the Florida and American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants. In 2008, he and Charles Bone, his longtime partner and best friend, sold the practice. He continued to work part-time at the newly named James and Harris C.P.A.s, P.A. with the new owner, Tim Howard, C.P.A. In 2015, he celebrated his 50th tax season. The consummate professional, he loved his work and practiced until his death, something he often said he would do. He was a gentleman, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. John was predeceased by a daughter, Laura Gilbert. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Nancy; daughters, Melissa Pridgen and Janet Bronner (Neil); granddaughters, Amber Babcock, Caitlyn Babcock, Bailey Bronner, and Spencer Bronner; grandsons, Zack Groff, Max Gilbert, and Lance Hoffman; great-grandson, Grayson Wolf; sister, Ruth Pridgen; and his brother Gary Pridgen (Ann). He loved his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. In his time away from the office, John's favorite pastime was boating. In the first year of their marriage, he and Nancy chose between installing a swimming pool at their first home or buying a boat. They chose the latter, bought a house on Black Creek and lived there for the twenty-eight years. Like most boaters, they upgraded until they acquired a craft large enough to be a comfortable home away from home. From that time forward, summer vacations were spent up and down the Intracoastal from Charleston to the keys, Okeechobee to the Gulf, and east to their favorite destination, the Bahamas. When they were not out on the water, they simply enjoyed being at home. A memorial service will be held March 22, 2017 at 11:00 am at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 1100 Stockton Street, Jacksonville, Florida, with The Reverend Jeff Reichmann officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's memory to the American Lung Association. Arrangements are under the direction of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL. (249-2374.) www.hardage-giddensbeacheschapel.com

Not sure what to say?

March 23, 2017

I have good memories of John Pridgen when I worked at James and Harris for several years. I worked at the Ed Ball Building at first and then moved to the offices near Broad Street. He always has a smile and was a true gentleman. I am so sorry for your loss but so thankful that he had a good life, family and enjoyed the gifts of life that made all of you happy. My sympathy to all of you at this time and know that he will be dearly missed.

we were John and Nancy's neighbors on Black Creek and could not of ask for any better neighbors. I just found out yesterday from another neighbor of his passing. What sticks out to me most was his laughter. And to his beloved wife Nancy we are so very sorry for your loss. Rest in peace John Pridgen! Bob and Debbie Simpson

I grew up through the 5th grade on Remington St., across the street from Randy and Gary's parent's home. I remember the family grocery store in Murray Hill, and C.P. Pridgen's Lyman boat and motor. Randy's brother, Gary and I are the same age. I had the pleasure of sharing some memories with Randy some years ago as our paths crossed on some business. I saw the picture of Gary and Ann at their wedding (Ann grew up just a few houses down on Remington). Our families were best of friends back then, but lost touch when we moved across town in about 1956. I was adopted at birth, and was told by my Mother that Ruth Pridgen provided natural nutrition to not only Gary, but me too. So, I hope the Pridgen family will enjoy this wonderful memory of growing up on Remington St. with a great family.

I meet John in the Army Reserves in 1968. I rode with him in his VW Fastback back and forth for Annual Training at Fort Eustis VA one year and found him to be a very pleasant and good person. All of his words were of kindness. Lost contact with him after he left the Reserves. Blessings to his family. I was saddened to read of his passing.

John became our family accountant after his partner Charlie Bone retired. Then John became our friend. I always looked forward to our office visits; John always took time for us and made me laugh. He was very patient and kind to my husband when Alzheimer's made Phil confused and impatient.

I will miss John dearly. He was a very, very good man and a good friend.

I can truly say that I don't remember a time when John didn't have a smile on his face. He was always the first one to laugh at a joke and appreciated time with his family. Melissa, Nancy and the rest of the family...I am so very sorry. Much love, Charlotte

If I could write a story about my Dad it would be the greatest story ever told. It would not only be about a kind a loving Dad, but also about an amazing Husband, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, Uncle and friend who had a heart of gold. I could write millions of pages but I would still be unable to say just how much I love and miss him. Life will never be the same without him and I will always remember him in a million different perfect ways.

This is a great loss to our community. John was not only a great CPA, he had more common sense than anyone I know. He went way out of his way to help others and was always positive and thinking of others. I've known John longer than I can remember. My mother, Lilla Barber was friends with John's mother and he would come over to her home and she would make breakfast for John, work on the taxes for Katherine Wadsworth Fashions and talk about the old days. My heart and prayers are with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
