Dear Mary,

I was so sorry to learn of John's passing. Our friendship goes back nearly 40 years, to Seton Hall days. I'll miss him very, very much.

I was relieved for his sake, however, that his suffering was over, and also comforted by the knowledge of how wonderfully you looked after him. Thank you for that.

I hope to see you soon out here in California, and perhaps out there in New Jersey, too, at any future memorial for John at the college.
