John Edgar (Ed) Schmutzer, age 64, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 31, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Rowena Schmutzer of Sevierville. Ed graduated from Sevier County High School and the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. He obtained his law degree from the University of Virginia and attended Keble College of Oxford University in England. Ed was a combat veteran having served as a Captain with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam 1971-1972. He was an Eagle Scout with Sevierville Troop 110, a member of the Knoxville Opera Guild, the Scottish Society of Knoxville, the Sons of the Revolution, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Sevierville. Ed recently became a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in Knoxville. After a brief stint in private practice in Nashville, he became Assistant U.S. Attorney in Knoxville, where he served for over 30 years. He is survived by his two children, John Schmutzer, Anne Chandler Lattimore and husband John Lattimore; brothers, Bill, and Al and wife Cheri; nieces, Jeannie Machon, Ann Geraci, Elizabeth Febo; nephew, Charles; several grandnieces and grandnephews; former wife, Susan Schmutzer and special friend, Debbie Dalton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org , Paws for Patriots at www.guidedogs.org or Wounded Warriors Project at www.woundedwarriorsproject.org . The family will receive friends 2-4 PM Wednesday with funeral service to follow at 4 PM at First United Methodist Church, Sevierville with Rev. Andrew Henry, Rev. John Ross (St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral, Knoxville) and Rev. Bobby Ely First United Methodist Church, retired) officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.
