Not sure what to say?

I have just learned of Mr. Schubert's (or John, as he later insisted I call him) passing, and I am so sorry to be late in offering my appreciation and condolences to Mrs. Schubert (Barbara) and their wonderful kids.

He was my 9th-grade English teacher at University School and taught me to read closely and sensitively. There was a hidden meaning in John Knowles's A Separate Peace, which was and still is a radical choice to teach at an all-boys school.

My fondest memory...

Salt of the earth, folks - John and Barbara Schubert. Kay and I are so sorry to hear of John´s passing and we offer our condolences to Barbara and the family. The Schuberts personify generosity, compassion and kindness. Our country, and world, needs many more considerate folks like them. Rest in peace John.

To the great Schubert family, John made a difference to so many people. This terrific photo captures the essence of the man. To the family, my deepest condolences. John is now free.

My husband and I became friends with John and Barbara Schubert whilst crossing Tanzania on the "Express" train during a tour of East Africa Jesuit Works. John´s gentle manner and good humor encouraged us on our way as we endured bugs, canned food, smoky cabins following an electric fire! He helped us all see the beauty of experience and the joy of comraderie Through the years we experienced his sincere support and friendship. My sincere condolences to Barbara and the family.

John inspired me by his endless curiosity about ideas, his openness, his true commitment to serving the vulnerable, and his love of family. He was a gentle, courteous, and thoughtful person amidst the noise of the world. A true educator. I am so sorry, Barbara. Jeanne Colleran

John, Barb, what a blessing it has been for me to know you both. John, I so remember your long walks to Geauga County and back, you looking like Thoreau checking out the trees and birds. Thank you! Marilyn Doerr
