I watched John work tugs in Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay when we were both young. I spent a lot of time on the tug Green Bay and can tell you that it is no easy life. John was good at what he did and he had True Grit. We have lost one of the Great Lakes biggest characters. A fair wind and following seas to carry you on your Heavenly voyage.

I remember the morning I was called as a boy when Mel lost his life that horrible night. I am lucky to have recently talked to John at the dedication to our maritime history celebration in Sturgeon Bay. I'm sorry to be out of the country but know that I mourn the loss of one of us, the people who make the lake their living! Fair winds John! Sail on Selvicks! Mike Kelsey and Family! Sturgeon Bay,Wi

We were deeply saddened to hear of John's passing, He was one of a kind, a true tug boat captain. He will be missed.
