Jack at work - checking a film for a clinician (see the person beside him).

In 1976 I was a terrified new resident at Riley Hospital. The first African American in the program. Dr. Smith took me under his wing and helped me through a very challenging stage in my life. A staff member asked once if I was his son. We laughed about that for many years and he always called me son, and I called him dad. Our own private joke. Thank you, Dad, for all of your guidance. Your legacy of giving so much to others lives on. Your family will be in my prayers.

I met Dr. Jack Smith a few times at IU, during the Annual Radiology Campbell Klatte lectures. He was a kind and gentle spirit. A brilliant and humble physician.

I will certainly miss seeing Jack come by the Porsche dealership. He was always so positive and a joy to be around.

I learned a lot from Jack when I was a resident at I.U. and later he was a colleague when I was on staff at Riley. I have many good memories from those years, and I want to express my sincere condolences to his family.

I met Dr. Jack Smith through my involvement with the Radiology Section National Medical Association. He was one of the more memorable members who immediately welcomed me to the Section as a fellow Pediatric Radiologist. He was a great mentor, friend and ambassador for our specialty. His memory will live within all of us who knew him.

All over USA and Europe, we always enjoyed visiting with Jack in pediatric radiology circles. We will miss seeing this outstanding person
