Jack was first my teacher and later my colleague. I was privileged to teach Prosthodontics with him at UNC for 3 years and once again benefitted from his guidance and knowledge as well as his friendship. He taught me to "make", not "take" impressions. His clinical skill and finesse was amazing and his willingness to share time and techniques was limitless.

I first learned to know Dr. Sowter as a professor, then later as a friend and mentor. Knowledgable, caring, pragmatic, unwavering integrity. He demonstrated these qualities to the benefit of his students, patients, friends, and colleagues. We will miss him.

Dr. Sowter was a special person to me. He was a very wise man. He and I talked at length many times when I needed advice. He always found the time to discuss issues. He always gave me a unbiased opinion wheather I liked the answer or not. He showed no favortism to anyone. He always treated people equal. He was the type of person that every community needs to make this world a better place. He was a behind the scenes type of person that you really did not know what he contributed until after...
