Not sure what to say?

RIP Prof John Stroupe my English language lecturer at WMU btw 1984-1986.

EXTREMELY AGGRIEVED AT THE DEATH OF JOHN STROUPE--MY TEACHER, MY FRIEND, MY MENTOR. Death in itself, they say, is not tragic. It is the sense of loss, an emptiness it leaves behind which is so cruel. So I pray for his family, esp. for his wonderful wife. I shall never be able to forget him as long as I live. I hope his wife lives to read my words of love and respect for that great man; I know she loved him dearly. Nasim Riaz Butt Mishjan House 1304 Green Acres Lahore, Pakistan

Though a year has passed since we lost John, my sadness for my dear friend Nancy and the rest of the immediate family has not altered. My sense is that John's lucid and wise understanding of the world and human nature gave strength to Nancy and the boys. And his beautiful music making, such a true expression of his inner life, gave so much pleasure to Nancy, at least as much as John's appreciation of her paintings gave her. I wish Nancy and the boys continued healing.

John was funny and incredibly wise. I will miss his advice and great sense of humor. Thank you sir. Forever and always.

John and I were good friends when we were grad students at the University of Rochester. We lost touch, but I have never forgotten him. He was brilliant, witty, and kind. My prayers are with Nancy and with all his family.

Dr. James, Dr. Val, and family... we were saddened to hear of the passing of your father. It sounds like he was an accomplished and interesting man. Sending love and support at this difficult time. We will hold you in our hearts. Dawn and Linnea

Dear ones,
What a splendid photo of John!!! It captures his refined intelligence, his gentle, loving soul, his wisdom....
Memories we elders have plenty of, and we summon them all too often as good-byes multiply year by year.
My memories of John begin in 1969, when, as a newcomer to Kalamazoo, I met my warm neighbors John and Nancy. At first, I thought John was one of those very bright cynics, altogether intimidating. But soon I learned how much he cared in a gentle, quiet,...

Debby and I send our heartfelt condolences to Nancy and the rest of the family. John and I were friends and colleagues for many years at WMU. In fact, John was my "social adviser" when I joined the Department of English, a relationship I almost immediately tested by asking that he help me move a very heavy sleeper sofa up a flight of stairs and around a corner. He did, of course, with typical good, if sardonic, humor. He was an admirable colleague and friend, and his and Nancy's...

Dr James, Dr Val and family: please accept our heartfelt and sincere condolences for the death of your father. In reading his obit, it was amazingly beautiful to read, of all his accomplishments in life, for which, he had a wonderful, long and loving time on this earth! We can see how he and your Mother raised you to be the man you are and in turn, raising your own beautiful family to be. Also know that our thoughts, prayers are surrounding you all. Fondly, Terri and Robert Hoare
