John Sykes Obituary

John L. Sykes, born December 3, 1916 in New Orleans, LA and lived in Jefferson, LA since September 1939. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Vasterling by first marriage and Bernadine Brady Collins by second marriage. He was the son of Clementine Ivon and John E. Sykes. He is survived by his children: Jeanne Sykes Broadway and son-in-law, James A. Broadway, Eileen C. Sykes Parr and son-in-law, Michael J. Parr; and his stepchildren: Janice Collins Gaudin and son-in-law, Pierre F. Gaudin and Everett G. Collins. He was predeceased by: his daughter, Ivy Anne Sykes and his stepdaughter, Marguerite Collins Mount and her husband, Matthew C. Mount. He is also survived by two granddaughters and nine grandsons, six great-granddaughters and nine great-grandsons. He was the brother of the late Myrtle Sykes Kilian and is survived by, Ivon Sykes Werling. John was a 1934 graduate of S.J. Peters High School, he proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He served as a member from the 7th Ward of Jefferson Parish on the School Board; he was chief administrative officer for Jefferson Parish Sheriff William Coci. By profession he was a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser and was one of the founding members of the Jefferson Parish Board of Realtors and served as a National Director of the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers. In later life he earned his Notary Public Commission in Jefferson Parish. He was the Former Master, Louisiana District #1, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus; Past Navigator of Fourth Degree, William J. Guste Assembly; Past Grand Knight Third Degree Father Seelos Counil No. 2878; President of St. Agnes Catholic Church Ushers Society and Past Commander, American Legion Post #267 as well as a member of the Jefferson Lions Club. He died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 7th, 2003 at the VA Hospital in New Orleans. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd., near Clearview Parkway, on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Interment in St. Patrick #2 Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.
