Thirty-three years ago when Dolores and I first started birding, John introduced us to many birds and many people on the Magee Marsh bird trail. We have been good friends and shared many exciting birding experiences ever since. At the Toledo Natualist's Association banquet in 2010, I had the honor of presenting John with the well deserved Naturalist of the Year Award. John was a caring and sharing person to everyone.

John was the very best kind of amateur naturalist -- a student of birding and nature who spent endless hours afield solely from his genuine love of being afield, and seeing the birds, and learning a little more every trip. And better yet, he shared his knowledge freely, enriching the outdoor experience of everyone who was lucky enough to wander the marshes and woodlots with him.
