John Richard Varcoe of Brackney, PA, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. The son of the late Willard and Marie (Hobbes) Varcoe, he was born in Carbondale, PA, on June 7, 1937.
John is survived by his loving wife and sweetheart, Emma (Emmy Lou/Hill), of almost 59 years, his son, Andrew, his daughter, Annette, his grandchildren, Rachel, John, Rebecca, Grace, David, and Mary, his sister, Jane, and many cherished neighbors and friends.
John was a graduate of Waymart High School, Bloomsburg State College, and Lehigh University. After starting his teaching career in Nazareth, PA, he joined the history department at Vestal High School, Vestal, NY, until his retirement in 1992.
A person of many interests, John enjoyed boating, snow mobiling, fishing, traveling, hunting, meeting new people, and reading, especially histories about the Civil War.
He was a member of the Equinunk Historical Society, the Waymart Historical Society, ANA, NRA and IGGA. For many years, John owned Endless Mountain Coins and Collectibles.
At his request, there will be no funeral service. Interment will be at Lookout Cemetery, Equinunk, PA.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mercy House, 212 North McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760.
The family wishes to especially thank Lourdes Hospice and the staff and volunteers at Mercy House for the care and compassion given to John on his final journey.
