John I. Vaught, 86, of Crawfordsville passed away Sunday evening at the Waters of Greencastle.
Mr. Vaught served in the Navy during World War II. At one time seven of the fourteen boys in the Vaught family were all in the U. S. military. He served aboard the U.S.S. Bache and was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and V for Valor. He was discharged in 1945 and served as Lt. Colonel in the Indiana National Guard Reserves. He was a life member of the American Legion, Post 72, where he served as finance officer for several years and served two consecutive terms as Post Commander. He was also a life member of VFW Post 1431, the M.O.P.H. and the Disabled American Veterans, Lafayette Chapter. He was a member of the U.S.S. Bache association, S.A.L. and 40 & 8.
Mr. Vaught was the owner and proprietor of A-1 Heating and Air Conditioning for 41 years. With this, he put the first copper roof on the Wabash Chapel and put copper roofing on Lane Place and the Gazebo. He attended Crawfordsville schools. He enjoyed golf, fishing, and being with his family.
Born March 23, 1927 in New Market, he was the son of Wallace L. Vaught and Wilma Marie Fritts Vaught. He married Doris Campbell on August 2, 1946 in Darlington.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Vaught, three children, Larry (Lenice) Vaught, Jacci Vaught Boone and Janet (David) Vaught Vice, grandchildren, Bryana Pierce, Vanessa (Rich) Stadler, Nick (Kathy) Vaught, Aaron (Kendra) Vaught, Carlie (Brent) Oakley and Elliot Vice, several great-grandchildren, and four brothers, Wallace Vaught, Robert "Bob" Vaught, Ernie Vaught and Edwin "Doc" Vaught.
He was preceded in death by nine brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Saturday at Burkhart Funeral Home with Richard Stadler officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Military rites by the American Legion and VFW will be held after the service.
