John Wyndal Vereen, 79, of North Myrtle Beach passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.
Born on July 25, 1935, in Horry County, he was the son of the late John Benjamin and Mary Idelle Anderson Vereen.
Mr. Vereen was a 1954 graduate of Myrtle Beach High School. As an all-star football player, he was voted Most Valuable Player and Lineman of the Year. An avid fisherman, he won the 1993 SKA Top Angler of the Year award. He also won the 1998 King Mackerel Classic which won him a boat and motor and the Division I title. Wyndal was well known not only in the local fishing world but was also recognized nationally for his fishing skills as well as other sport fishing awards, too numerous to mention. One of Wyndal's great joys was driving his stock car on the old dirt tracks in Little River.
Survivors include two daughters Sherry Vereen and Georgie Vereen; his former wife, Ramona F. Vereen; one brother, Rayford Vereen; one grandson, Seth Ensley; and Dianne Hickman, a most gracious and caring person in his life.
He was predeceased by one brother, Jerry R. Vereen of North Myrtle Beach.
A celebration of his life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at Ian's (formerly Poo's.)
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sea Haven Youth Home or Ron McManus Memorial Reef, PO Box 3653, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29582.

Sherry and Georgie, my heart goes out to you. Having lost my father at a young age, I use to watch you interacting with your Dad and it was so obvious how much he loved you. And more than a Dad you all seemed like friends! I like to think that my Dad and I would have shared that special bond you three had.

My husband and I arrived here in 2003 and met Wyndal Vereen at our new home. He was a friend of my father and my family. A most gracious and welcoming neighbor. Through the years Wyndal proved to be a wonderful friend always careing and giving of himself. We will miss you Wyndal.

My deepest sympathy to Wyndal's family & friends. If one were to designate an index card for each topic in life that Wyndal discussed with me during our short 32 year friendship, there would be a dump truck full,(and Wyndal would have an opinion of the dump truck) I'll never forget the first time I met Wyndal in 1983, he was my friend everyday thereafter.
