Army Sgt. 1st Class John Marshall referred to himself as an "old soldier" with a clear purpose and little luxury to debate the reason for his mission. "It's really not an issue with me," he wrote home in an e-mail. "I am not a politician or a policy maker, just an old soldier." Marshall, who lived in Sacramento, Calif., was killed April 8 by an Iraqi rocket-propelled grenade. At 50, Marshall was the oldest American military casualty of the war in Iraq. He grew up in Los Angeles, enlisted when he was 18 and served in Korea and Germany. He leaves a wife, Denise, and six children, ages 9 to 17.

I knew John when he arrived to Ft Stewart back in the early 90's, I remember running into him again at Ft Knox in the late 90's and he was going to return to Ft Stewart. I asked him if he would ever go back to California and he said no because he was excited about retiring one day in Hinesville. I was sadden and shocked when I first heard his name on the TV and I was hoping it wasnt the John Marshal I knew. Please accept my sympathy on behalf on me and my family.

To the family and friends of John.
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That...
