Mr. Whelan was an exemplary educator and I am glad our paths crossed. He was my principal at Chambers Elementary and we stayed in touch after I moved to Euclid. He was always accessible and he’s one of the reasons I became an educator. He care about people and he made sure we had the best experiences. God Bless Him!

This has come as a shock to me. Mr. Whelan came across my mind today and I decided to look him up on Facebook. Then I learned of his passing. He was a great principal at Chambers Elementary. I always enjoyed him coming to our classroom very excited and smiling and just very loving. I have been in the education system now for 20 years and I have never seen a principal that can compare to his dedication to education into the students in the building. He will be greatly missed.

Professor Whelan defined what it means to be an enthusiastic, passionate, and driven educator. I was fortunate enough to have him at John Carroll University; I would have loved to work for him in the professional setting. His spirit and influence continues on in the lives of the educators he inspired and the students that are, in turn, inspired.

Joe was a remarkable man who despite his age as years passed maintained a level of enthusiasm, love of life, interest in others, deep passion about his pursuits, willingness to reach out and help, accomplish multiple accolades. Now even in his death he continues to serve as a shining light of how to live life to its fullest. Life well done Joe!!!

I just received my latest edition of the John Carroll Magazine and read about Professor Whelan's passing. He inspired me and believed I could become a successful educator. I have been teaching high school for 16 years and owe a great deal to his vision. My deepest condolences to his family.
