John A. Widmark 89, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Sunday November 5 at Dougherty Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.


John was born July 4, 1934 at his parents’ farm in Ivanhoe, MN. His parent were Albert and Hulda (Anderson) Widmark.


He graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1952.


He married Margaret Dorn of Hendricks, MN on October 16, 1954. Together they had two children Lori and Barry.


John served two years in the US Army. He then attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught Agriculture in Kiester, MN for one year. He then worked for General Mills in Minneapolis. He later worked as a hog buyer in South St. Paul, MN. In 1974, the family moved to Sioux Falls. He continued to work as a hog buyer for different meat packing plants in Sioux Falls, Huron, and Worthington, MN. At the time of his retirement in 1994, he was Head of Procurement for Monfort in Worthington, MN.


After retirement, he and Margaret became snowbirds and spent 16 winters in Pharr, TX. John’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. In his younger years, he enjoyed trips back to the farm as well as hunting and fishing. More recently, his passion was feeding and watching birds.


John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Margaret, son, Barry (Patty): step granddaughter; Katie Bachtell Tea, SD; granddaughter, Jesse Muhs (Ryan); step great granddaughter, Everly, Brandon, SD and grandson, Cody of Pierre, SD.


He was proceeded in death by daughter, Lori; his parents; brother, Arnold; sisters, Ione Helen, Lorraine and Kay.


John will be truly missed by all that knew him.


A celebration of life service will be held 11:00am Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. www.heritagesfsd.com
