Feerick Funeral Home - Shorewood Obituary

John/Jay Wohlen was born in Milwaukee, but spent a childhood he described as idyllic in LaCrosse. At age 16 he lost his father and the family returned to Milwaukee, where he developed a life long love affair with the East Side. He left to serve his time with the US Army in the Signal Corps. First in Germany, then Ethiopia, and finally in Viet Nam. He graduated from UWM with a degree in archtectural engineering. But a casual summer school typing class ultimately led him to a lifetime carrer in IT. He worked for many years at Western Industries and then for Milwaukee County. He retired, but never stopped working. He loved working as a consultant, problem solving for a number of companies.

Jay's search for a spiritual fulfilment led him to the Milwaukee Shambhala Center, where he has been a practicing Buddhist for more than 40 years. The practice that provided him with the most joy was Ikebana, which he loved sharing and teaching to others.

Jay is survived by his life partner of more than 20 years, Donna Merical; three nieces; and a great nephew. This is in addition to an untold numbers of friends and acquaintances.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 E. Capitol Dr., Shorewood from  1:00 P.M.  until the time of sharing of memories at 3:00 P.M.

Memorials in Jay's name will be directed to several of his favorite charities.

Not sure what to say?

I worked with John at FIS, and he was an amazing and talented man. I lost contact with him after he left FIS, but always thought about him whenever I use the database we created together, which is every day. With the new year, I decided to look him up again, and was broken hearted to find this. May you rest peacefully good friend, you will be missed.
