John Wyckliffe “JW” Vaughan Jr., 71, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Hospice Home of Forsyth County while in the presence and care of his family.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, 858 Hickory Tree Rd. A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, January 15 at 2:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem.
Born November 24, 1945 in Richmond, Virginia, Mr. Vaughan was the son of the late John Wyckliffe Vaughan Sr. and Alise Hubbard Vaughan. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and remained a spirited Hokie fan. Mr. Vaughan was a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and later proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He began his career with John Deere where he operated dealerships in Texas and North Carolina before many years in telecommunications sales and marketing from which he retired from Walker & Associates, Inc. in 2008. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he loved to serve in any way he was able. J.W. was an outgoing, vivacious people-person who never met a stranger. He had a deep love for music and thoroughly enjoyed dancing. His love for life and his unquenchable joy was infectious to those around him. He will be remembered for his love of God and his loving-kindness and compassionate heart towards others.
Mr. Vaughan was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Penelope “Penny” Ann Munn Vaughan. Surviving are his dear friend, Carole Thomas, of Winston-Salem; his sons, John Wyckliffe Vaughan III and wife, Melanie, of Atlanta, GA and Mark Alexander Vaughan and wife, Layne, of Welcome, NC; his daughter, Emily Jane Leonard and husband, Anthony, of Salisbury, NC; three grandsons by his son John, Ethan W. Vaughan, Tyler C. Vaughan and Peyton M. Vaughan; two grandsons by his daughter Emily, O’Connor A. Leonard and Isaiah P. Leonard; three granddaughters by his son Mark, Penelope L. Vaughan, Layla M. Vaughan, Salem A. Vaughan; four brothers, Lynn Vaughan, Victor Vaughan, Don Vaughan and Randy Vaughan; and three sisters, Judy Perkins, Sherry Mae Howerton and Jessie Sue Tipton.
