Anytime I am asked about a teacher who had an impact on me I always put Dr. Bland on top of my list. I was a student of his in the late 80's, and he had an incredible way of making science seem interesting and cool, which is a huge accomplishment for middle-schoolers! I'll never forget his illustrative way of teaching; regarding cellular mitochondria--"It's da powah-house!" How could I ever forget that? He changed the way I felt about learning. A life well lived.

Mr. Bland always made me feel like a valuable human being with something to contribute to the world. Junior high isn't an easy time for anyone, but his humor and ability to see unique and positive qualities in his students will always be remembered. He taught six of the seven children in my family (brothers and sisters of mine) and also taught my father. His gifts and talents were appreciated by all in my family.

Of all of the teachers I've had over all the years Dr. Bland was my favorite. He made a huge impact on me. He believed in me and he showed it. His impact on me still ripples through my life today. My heart is just broken. Thank you for being who you were and doing so much for so many. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
