Mr. Johnny Ward Carnes, 81, passed away Saturday March 5, 2011 at Autumn Care of Marshville with his beloved wife, Elizabeth, holding his hand. Johnny was born in Union County, NC, February 3, 1930, son of the late Theron and Jennie Carnes. Johnny was retired from Able Metals where he worked as a mechanic; he also served as a firefighter for Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department in the sixties. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Gordon Funeral Service 1904 Lancaster Ave. Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 9, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Gordon Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. Johnny is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Francis Carnes of the home, two sons, Johnny Michael Carnes and wife Teresa of Apex, Johnnie "Butch" Carnes, Jr. and wife Carol of Monroe, one daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Deese and husband Bill of Mineral Springs; seven grandchildren, Kelly Laton and husband Charles of Monroe, Brandon Carnes and Stephanie McCoy of Apex, Christopher Deese and fiancée, Heather Calhoun, Teresa Snodgrass and Zachary Simpson, Matt Deese, Jacob Carnes all of Monroe, and Chris Carnes of Apex; one great granddaughter, Olivia Laton of Monroe; two loving friends whom he considered a son and daughter, Johnny Coppedge and Karen Lowery of Monroe; two brothers, Ray Carnes and wife Nora Ann of Indian Trail, Walter Carnes and wife Jean of Marshville; two sisters, Joyce Burgess and late husband Fred of Holden Beach and Elsie Tucker and husband Paul of Monroe. The family has suggested in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter, 9801-1 Southern Pine Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28273.
