Johnny Higdon
September 25, 1947 - March 17, 2013
Macon, GA- Johnny Ray Higdon, age 65, passed away Sunday at his home in Macon. Johnny was an inspiration to his family as well as everyone whoever met him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. And finally we must all say goodbye to Johnny.
Johnny was born in Gadsden, Alabama to the late Hubert and Ruby Humphrey Higdon. He later moved to Macon where he attended Willingham High School. In 1963, when Johnny was a sophomore, he fell from a tree while retrieving a kite for his younger brothers. The injury left him physically and mentally impaired and ended his promising athletic career.
He became the "Spirit Director" at Willingham (and later Southwest) and was an inspiration to thousands of folks. 2009 was a monumental year for Johnny. On April 12th he was inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame. In August, at the Willingham/McEvoy all class reunion at the City Auditorium, Johnny was given his honorary high school degree.
Johnny is survived by brothers Jody Higdon (Bonnie) of Macon, Bill Higdon of Lizella, Charles Higdon of Macon, Ricky Higdon (Kelly) of Bolingbroke, Chucky Higdon (Crystal) of Macon, and Tommy Higdon of Gray; sisters Millie Arnold (Jimmy) of Jeffersonville, Carol Mosely of Macon, and Michelle Howard (Dan) of Macon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Johnny was preceded in death by sisters Susie Long and Peggy Dean, niece Brittney Higdon, and sister-in-law Ellen Higdon.
A graveside service to celebrate Johnny's life will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday at Crest Lawn Funeral Home. The Reverend David Mosely, Majors Don and Daphne Vick, and Mr. Ed Grisamore will officiate.
The family would like to express its appreciation to the administration and nursing staff at Heritage Health Care for their devoted care of their brother. The facility was chosen because it was exactly one mile from the high school and the family never regretted this choice. This was truly his home.
