John C. Unitas

My Father told me there was no other quarterback like Unitas. Dad met him at a conference years after he retired and said Unitas was friendly. easy to talk to and impressed many people there. Rest in Peace, Johnny.

I remember two Unitas calls. One was 4th and goal at the six or seven yard line. Obviously a pass was coming. Unitas called a draw play, and the center and fullback walked alone and untouched into the end zone. Another, on the two yard line, had Unitas split Berry out to the left a bit, while he took the snap on the right hash mark, back in the day when hash marks were more widely spread than they are now. It's amazing how much magic is still attached to this man's name after all these years. There have been great quarterbacks since, but for the kids of my time, Johnny Unitas remains the person we compare each one to.

I met Mr. Unitas at a celebrity Night at Bromwell's bar in Fullerton md in 1984 or 1985, He walked pasted and I yelled The Greatest Quarter Back in the world and he walked over and shook my hand and asked my name , He was so nice that he talked with me for a good while, and I got him to sign my shirt and he did and then he drew a funny picture on my shirt and told me he dont do much of those for any body, But I Loved talking and Laughing and the drawing on my shirt with his signature .Great...

I grew up loving the Baltimore colts and idolizing the greatest quarter back of all time...Johnny was always such a gentleman when I had the several chances to meet him. It is hard to believe you have been gone 21 years....RIP and God bless..

As 20 years since this loss is now approaching, let's never forget. We are unlikely to ever see another true giant like the one and only golden arm with his genuine humility. One of a kind.

Johnny was my hero when I was a boy in the 50's and his example of hard nose work ethic has followed me all my life. All I have to do is close my eye and picture a crew cut and high tops and I am back in the old living room watching the Colts on a snowy black and white set! Thanks for giving me a role model all those years ago Johnny U!!!
