Broomhead Funeral Home - Riverton Obituary

"BIG"
Jon unexpectedly departed this life on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, leaving behind his dear and special family, daughters: Samantha and Amanda (Loyd Carignan), son Michael, children's mother, Lisa Knudsen and spouse Andy, adored grandchildren: Nathan and Ashlyn, Gracie May and Brixton.
Born in Salt Lake City February 12, 1964. Attended Granger High School. Loved all sports. He encouraged and attended all of his kids sports activities. Mostly you would find him in the far section for those who could not control their language (The Swearing Section). You could say the devotion to sports was the family religion. He tried to pass on his expertise to his kids and Grandkids, always coaching and helping them develop their skills. He was always right (so he thought).
He was an especially avid golfer. He made it a part of every day, whether it be watching Tiger or squeezing in a quick 9 holes. He enjoyed the Utah Jazz and attended as many games as he could with his grandkids and sometimes his good buddies. He may not have appreciated the local baseball team, but he sure liked sitting at the ball park in the sunshine with a cold one. I guess it was Baseball he loved. If there was any fact or statistic you wanted to know, he was The Sports Encyclopedia (according to him). Another favorite activity was sitting in his big camping chair throwing a line out. He loved to fish. You could say he pretty much loved anything in "that sunshine".
He is very well known in the Tile Industry. When Samantha was born he found his true vocation in Tile, pursuing it first in California and excelled later in Utah. He started several different commercial companies lastly JDM Tile with his good friend and Partner Jack Moody. He formed many special bonds with multiple people in the tile business. Larry Mccleary and Daltile particularly.
The gruff, pushy exterior hid his kindness and huge heart as our "Gentle Giant!"
Also survived by his mother Bette Jardine Gibbens, brother Geoffrey Gibbens, sisters Jenny Lyman and Jerry Aszmus, many nieces, nephews, family and friends, former wife Sonya Koestel Gibbens, stepchildren Amber, Tyson, and Dylan Lund. Preceded in death by brother Jim and grandparents.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 6 o'clock PM at the Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 S 2200 W Riverton, UT. In honor of "BIG's" love of sports and comfortable, casual clothing, please come in your sports attire.
