Sarah G Alvarez (grandaughter)

December 14, 2021

This is from our daughter Sarah Alvarez
My heart hurts so badly. Today I lost one of the most important people in my life, my Papa.
.
How do I even begin to describe this beautiful soul? He was brilliant, insightful, methodical, compassionate and ohhh so wise. He was a listener. And when I say a listener I mean it. He would listen to every single word that came out of my mouth and have such compassion and care in his responses. He was an artist...and a damn good one at that. His paintings always had such thought and deep meaning behind them. Every single one. My Papa loved his orchids and tended to his plants with such love and patience. He would feed his birds and squirrels every single morning without fail- they would all wait in the backyard for him as if he was Snow White lol. He was the kindest of men. He truly valued every living creature on this planet and treated everyone around him as an equal. He adapted to the times even at 95 and never used his age as an excuse to not accept others. He believed people should love who they love and live their lives authentically.
.
My grandfather was not one to boast of his accomplishments nor did he ever do so to me, but I was lucky enough to learn a bit about his 95 years on this planet and in his honor I will do something that he was too humble to do and share a few details of his incredible life.
Jose Enrique Alvarez truly lived a full life, and I when I say full I mean full. He was a husband, friends, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He was ever so hardworking in his schooling and career and attended Harvard business school before starting up his own businesses in Cuba and later the Virgin Islands. He would never upright say this to others, but he did in fact own the largest insurance company in the Virgin Islands in the 1970s among others. In his spare time he enthusiastically practiced sailing, fishing, underwater fishing, archery, fencing and pistol shooting. He left Cuba with over 20 trophies and awards in fishing and shooting. He represented the Virgin Islands in the Pan American Games, Cali, Colombia in 1971 and in the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, in 1972. I could go on and on about his accomplishments, and believe me, I want to...but I also know that he wasn´t one to do that. He was the most humble, wonderful man who just loved his birds and plants and found such joy in the little moments of life. He lived his life exactly the way he wanted-MEANINGFULLY. He will be missed more than I can possibly express.
.
As the tears stream down my face as I write this, I just can´t put into words what a profound honor it is to call him my grandfather. I love you forever, Papa.
All my love,
Sarita
