Baca's Funeral Chapels - Las Cruces Obituary

JOSE SERNA BARELA, 71, of Las Cruces passed away Monday October 7, 2024, at Three Crosses Hospital surrounded by his loved ones. He was born November 6, 1952, in Mesilla to Lydia L. Serna and Bentio L. Barela. Jose or Joe, as he was known to family and friends was employed at White Sands Missile Range as a maintenance technician until his retirement. 


He will always be remembered for his passion of riding his Harley Davidson.


Survivors include 2 sons, Jose C. Barela of Las Cruces, and Daniel E. Barela of, AZ; 4 daughters, Liliana Ordonez (Jerry) of Las Cruces; Cynthia Barela of Texas; Domonique Hernandez of AZ; and Senida Barela of NM; 2 brothers, Reynaldo Barela (Juanita) of Las Cruces, and Ernesto Barela (Ofelia) of NV; 6 sisters, Patricia, Socorro, Ramona, and Eva Barela all from Las Cruces, Lilia Barela (Jerry) of NM and Dolores Barela of TX. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jose was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Benny, Jesse, Lupe, and Joe Fred Barela; 3 sisters, Teresita Ramos, Linda Acosta, and Delia Barela, and other family members. 


Visitation for Joe will begin at 2 PM Friday, October 18, 2024, at Baca’s Funeral Chapel, 300 E. Boutz Road with the Funeral Liturgy at 3:30 PM. At his request cremation will take place and Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date. Military honors will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League - El Perro Diablo Detachment.
