Jose D. Castañeda

JOSE D. CASTAÑEDA, age 91 of Las Cruces entered eternal life Friday, June 30, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 26, 1926 in Malaga, New Mexico to Arnulfo and Gregoria Valdillez Castañeda. Mr. Castañeda worked in the Utilities Department with the City of Las Cruces until his retirement in June of 1988.

Survivors include four sons, Ramon A. Castañeda of Bakersfield, California, Octavio A. Castañeda (Melissa West) of Santa Fe, Miguel A. Castañeda (Mae) of Las Cruces and Raul A. Castañeda of Albuquerque; one daughter, Emma Castañeda (Jack Begley) of Titusville, Florida; four brothers, Refugio, Ausencion, Pedro and Margarito Castañeda all of Mexico. Other survivors include 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Velia Castañeda in 2000, daughter, Olivia Ortega in 2010, as well as other siblings.

Visitation will begin at 6 PM Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Baca’s Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road, with Recitation of the Holy Rosary scheduled for 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Thursday, July 6, to 2017 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine and Parish in Tortugas with the Reverend Valentine Jankowski, Celebrant. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Tortugas Cemetery where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife.

Serving as casket bearers will be Ramon, Octavio, Raul and Joshua Castañeda, Neto Pena, Sergio and Salvador Ortega and Michael Ontiveros, Jr.
