Jose M. Cordeiro, known to many as “Joe,” passed away on January 7, 2026, at the age of 78. He was born on November 24, 1947, in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Açores, Portugal.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, José and Berta Cordeiro, and his brother, Mario F. Cordeiro. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cecilia Cordeiro; his sister, Lizete Coelho; five sons, Mark (Pauline), James (Tracie), Paul (Tiffany), Thomas (Megan), and Phillip (Coley) and five grandchildren, Aaron, Tyler, Lucus, Abigail, and Finley who brought him immense joy.
Joe was a proud union member of Local #1130 in Modesto for 51 years, working on underground crews throughout California. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his trade. He and his wife raised their family in Newman, where he enjoyed farming, fishing, camping, and time with loved ones. Joe was also a board member of the Crows Landing Pentecost Society.
Joe was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016 and was surrounded by the love and support of his family throughout his illness.
A Visitation will be held on January 22, 2026, from 4:00–6:00 p.m., with a rosary at 6:00 p.m., at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on January 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Newman, followed by interment at Hills Ferry Cemetery.
Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association.
