Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

Jose G. Cumpian beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away into the arms of the Lord on December 11, 2015 at the age of 86.  Jose was born in Crystal City, Texas on Feb. 18, 1929.  He was preceded in death by his parents Maria & Miguel Cumpian, his sister Estella Tyson and his brother Ramiro Cumpian.  Joe is survived by his wife Romana Cumpian and his sister Bertha Munoz; his sons Daniel and Joseph Cumpian; his daughters Teresa Dize & Patricia McDougall as well as his stepdaughters, Linda Bailey and Claudia Moreno.

Jose started his life's journey working in the cotton fields in Crystal City, but his ambitions drove him to get his GED and enlist in the United States Marine Corps in 1946.  After serving two years in the Marine Corps Jose decided to pursue higher education.  Subsequently, he attended St. Mary's University where he graduated with a B.A. on 27 May, 1952. Seizing upon the opportunity to serve his country again, Jose accepted a commission in the U.S. Army Reserves as a 1st Lieutenant, where he served his country honorably for 28 years retiring as Lieutenant Colonel from the Judge Advocate Corps, US Army Reserves.  That same year in 1952, Jose decided to continue his education at St. Mary's University. He graduated with honors at St. Mary's University Law School receiving a Bachelor of Laws degree. As a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, Jose continued his military and civilian education completing the Judge Advocate Generals Corps Reserve Component General Staff Course in October 1973 and receiving a Juris Doctor degree from St. Mary's University in 1975.

After retiring from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1980 Jose continued to practice law in San Antonio, Texas.  He is best known to his friends and peers for being a tough lawyer, while simultaneously being a good and kind person.  He went above and beyond what his clients asked for and he frequently worked for little or no money.  Jose supported his community by donating his time and money to disadvantaged high school and college students.  Jose was also a devout catholic, husband and family man. Jose your wife and family appreciate your sacrifice and love that you have shown us.  You will be greatly missed.

Special thank you to Dr. U Nwoye and P. Augustin and the nurses at Healthsense Home Care.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at The Angelus Funeral Home.  Funeral procession will depart The Angelus Chapel Wednesday, Dec. 16th at 8:15 a.m. with Mass offered at 8:45 a.m. at San Fernando Cathedral, 115 Main Plaza, San Antonio TX 78205.  Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Not sure what to say?

I was one of Jose's professors at Law School and a friend during his professional life. I had the utmost respect for him as a person and a lawyer. I referred several clients to him after I retired. I am sad to hear of his passing. He always had very strong opinions on his politics. As I recall he followed the basketball team of St. Marys. I will certainly miss him.

To The Cumpian Family,

I met Mr. Cumpian at St.Mary"s University where I attended college. I remember how encouraging and enthusiastic he was with The Rattler's Basketball Team. He helped us out of a few gaffs, and was there for myself and my wife, when we lost our daughter. We have always been grateful for that Special Talk, he gave to us after our loss. Heaven gained another Special Angel with his HomeGoing. He will surely be missed but always remembered for his Love of...
