SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) – Former San Francisco Giants shortstop Jose Uribe was killed early Friday in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic, authorities said.
Uribe, 47, was in his sport utility vehicle when it crashed about 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) on a highway 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of the capital, Santo Domingo, the Dominican National Police said in a statement.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
Uribe's death was confirmed to The Associated Press by Glovis Reyes, a longtime friend of the ballplayer and a former member of the Dominican Congress.
"It's a very sad incident," said Pablo Peguero, a local baseball scout. "He was a great player for the Giants, a serious man and dedicated to his family."
Earlier this year, Uribe, whose son, Juan, plays shortstop for the Chicago White Sox, ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Juan Baron, his hometown in San Cristobal province where police said he was driving to at the time of the crash.
"Uribe was a very loved person in Juan Baron. He was like the lord of the town," Reyes said.
While playing for the Giants, Uribe would return to his home country frequently and played in the country's winter baseball league. In recent years, he owned a hardware store in his hometown.
Uribe played 10 seasons in the major leagues from 1984 to 1993, mostly with the Giants. He began his career with one season in St. Louis and ended it with one in Houston. He had a career batting average of .241 and a fielding percentage of .969.

So sad to hear about his demise so early in life. He and my husband at the time were teamates for the San Francisco Giants. His first wife Sarah and I were close, and it was so sad to hear she had died @ age 27 after giving birth. I send my prayer and condolences to the family. They ere a great couple.

Estimada Familia Uribe,

I grew up and lived right near Jose and his cousin Wilson in Foster City. I was only 16 years old then and I used to hang out with them all the time. I used to work out with Wilson all the time and also with Jose a few times too. Such a nice guy! I have a lot of memories of those times and they will live on forever...
RIP JOSE!
