Joe was a fine geologist and a charismatic gentleman. I enjoyed occasional visits with Joe at his office and at field sites. We shared a passion for arid zone hydrology. I am saddened that Joe has passed, but I celebrate his full and meaningful life.

Joe was a great friend, colleague and mentor. Joe has had a great influence on my career as a professional geohydrologist and I would not be the person I am today had it not been for his years of guidance and mentorship. I will miss Joe dearly.

Dr. Birman was a great professor at Occidental College. I was lucky enough to have been his student during the late '70s and he left a lasting impression. RIP, Dr. Birman, you will be missed.
