Honaker Funeral Home, Inc. - Slidell Obituary

Joseph Culotta Jr, 86, former radio Talk Show host for twenty-five years in New Orleans, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018 in Slidell. He was a native and longtime resident of New Orleans and a resident of Slidell since 1984. Joseph is survived by his wife of 64 years, Miriam Arcoleo Culotta; three children, Kim Sager (Jeffrey), Karen McCord (Tracy), Joseph Culotta III (Michael); five grandchildren, Jeffrey Sager Jr., Jeremy Sager, Kaleigh McCord Pedersen, Carley McCord Ensminger, Carson McCord; two great-grandchildren, Parker Pedersen, Palmer Pedersen; one sister, Ann Schneller.

Joe was a man of many talents and pursuits. The one endeavor that has left a lasting impression on the greater New Orleans area was his position as the host of the popular radio talk show “Let’s Talk It Over” from 1965 until 1990. Every Sunday morning for those twenty-five years folks on the Mississippi coast, the New Orleans area, and much of bayou country would wake up to hear the lively discussions on his program. The first 21 years of his show were on WTIX radio, and his last four on WNOE.  He interviewed way more notable guests over the years to list here, but included numerous U.S. Presidents, U.S. Senators, and members of Congress. Every local mayor called him friend. He would always sign off his program with saying, “There are three things you can never compromise, your God, your country, and your principles.” And he always played the National Anthem after saying that. Every Sunday.

After leaving the navy, Joe joined the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. After over thirty years of service he retired as the Southeast Regional Supervisor. Joe also taught night classes at Tulane University for many years. After retiring from the LDVA he went on to teach Chemistry and Physics at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School in Slidell. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 910 Crossgates Blvd. Slidell LA 70461, on Friday, July 20, 2018, at 12:00noon. Friends may visit at the church on Friday beginning at 9:30am.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Slidell.

My Grandpw was also Joseph Culotta he passed away in 2017. I am a Army vet and was feeling down. Your Jospeh like my Grandpa was a WWII navy vet too. I googled him and found this memory pages. Something I read him say in your memory of him, was ;" There are three things you can never compromise, your God, your country, and your principles." I can´t explain why that means alot to me, but it did. I feel blessed to know my grandpa had a twin in looks and name. He sounds amazing and I think he...

Miriam, please accept our sincere sympathy for Joe's passing and apologize for not being at the funeral. The death notice that appeared in The Advocate indicated the date of a Memorial Service was pending. We would definitely have been at the funeral. Vinson & I have so many memories of you and Joe. He was always such a hugh personality. You & your family are in our thoughts & prayers at this difficult time. Please call if there is anything we can do.
