Jul 2, 1966 – Sep 1, 2017 (Age 51)
Joseph D'Alessio of Reading passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, after an eight month battle with kidney cancer. He was 51 years old.
Joe was born on July 2, 1966, in Englewood, NJ. His family moved to Massachusetts and he attended Lunenburg High School. Joe graduated from Stonehill College in 1988, and had a successful 29-year career at John Hancock.
There is a thread that is woven into the fabric of Joe's life and it was his ability to forge friendships and bonds that have continued for years. For those who knew Joe, it was his warm smile, quiet nature and reliable, calm easy way.
It was evident in his 24 year marriage to his beloved wife and very best friend Lisa (Brown) D'Alessio. Joe was incredibly proud of and devoted to his children, Michael and Jill. Some of his favorite times were spent with Lisa, the kids and extended family relaxing on the porch of his family's home in Popham Beach, Maine.
Joe was blessed with wonderful friends throughout his life. Every March, for 28 years, Joe and a group of longtime loyal friends went on their annual "Ski Weekend". This weekend was full of laughter and stories and these friendships have been a constant source of strength and support for Joe.
While family and friends were important to Joe, so was baseball in Reading. He coached his son, Mike, and many fortunate young players in Reading Youth Baseball. Joe was also involved with in other aspects of Reading Baseball serving on the boards of Reading Babe Ruth and Friends of Reading High School Baseball. With a team of friends, he tirelessly maintained and groomed Morton Field and was instrumental in the redesign of the field now known as Moscariello Ballpark.
In addition to his wife and children, Joe was loved by many family members. He is survived by his parents, Thelma D'Alessio of Templeton, MA, Joe D'Alessio & his wife Rose of Fitchburg, MA; his sister, Justine Welch, her husband Mike and nephews Nicholas & Steven LaCouture, all of Templeton, MA. He is also survived by his in-laws, Reynold & Ellie Brown of Winchester, MA, Greg & Leah Brown of Andover, MA, and many members of the Brown and FitzGerald families.
Funeral from the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading on Saturday September 9 at 9:30AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Agnes Church 186 Woburn St. Reading at 10:30AM. Funeral home visiting hours Friday 3:00-8:00PM. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers contributions to help and maintain Joe's legacy of support of Reading baseball and girl's lacrosse may be made to the Joe D'Alessio Memorial Fund, c/o Reading Cooperative Bank, 180 Haven St., Reading, MA 01867.
My condolences to all the D'ALessio family and friends on the anniversary of Joe's passing. He was a great guy.

Joe represented John Hancock for a product they acquired from my employer. For about 15 years we spoke several times a year and met annually; he was beloved by our product team! Always kind, fun, warm, knowledgeable, and reliable, we loved working with Joe. Job changes ended our routine contact, but we shared an occasional coffee break by phone. The last time we spoke in 2016, he spoke proudly of Michael - a freshman at Holy Cross, and Jill - a high school sophomore. Know that as dedicated...

I'm saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I worked with him at JH when I lived in Boston and he always brought a smile to my face with his jokes and jovial attitude. I fondly remember him visiting me at the Sox games when I was working, again always with a warm smile. May God carry Lisa and his children as well as his extended family through this time.

So shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of Joe. I worked with Joe at John Hancock for a few years. He always made my job easier with his smile and easy way. Although we did not work together closely in the recent past years, it was always a welcome site to pass him in the halls and chit chat. I honestly had no idea Joe was ill and his passing has impacted me. Prayers to you and your family.
