New London, NH – Joseph Mitchell DeChant died peacefully in New London Hospital on February 13 at the age of 89.
He was born May 8, 1934 in Cumberland, Maryland to Army Chaplain Wilson Blough DeChant and Alberta Mitchell DeChant. Joe enlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean War. He graduated from West Point and married Thais Traver in 1958.
Joe spent over 30 years in the US Army, with tours in Iran, Vietnam, Germany and Saudi Arabia. He has lived in or visited all 50 states. He retired to New London, NH in 1986 and was a member of The First Baptist Church of New London.
Joe donated to many charitable organizations. He loved visits from family and friends, skiing, hiking, bicycling, fixing things, cook outs, and working on his model trains. He volunteered with boy scouts, girl scouts, and ROTC.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Wilson and Alberta DeChant, his wife Thais T. DeChant, and his grand daughter Chloe Rose Ostema. Survivors include daughters Debbie Ostema (Dale) of Traverse City, Michigan and Denise DeChant of New London, NH; 2 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at The First Baptist Church of New London. All are welcome to attend.

So sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. As you know we worked together in the sport shop for
many years. Josh and I learned a lot from him. For example, "before you start putting it together, JK, read
the instructions............twice !!"
