Not sure what to say?

I narrowly missed taking Joe's class my first summer in Kalamazoo. My wedding was scheduled out of state. Despite knowing him around the Philosophy department I only got to know him that last year when I drove him to doctor visits and helped him clean and take care of the plants and the cat, Luke. My wife would make him beef stew for which he was always grateful. I still, after all these years, think of the conversations I got to have that year. They cut right to the bone of it all. ...

Joe Ellin was a memorable contributor to philosophical discussions, and a wonderfully personable and charming man - and the author of a lot of very good philosophical writing.

I remember sitting in the Ellins' living room (because that's where our class was held), wearing my coat (because it was November and that part of the house wasn't heated), and discussing ethical relativism.

Joe was an active and provocative participant not only in the American section of the International Assn for Philosophy of Law, but also the Canadian section. His was the only regular USA participant there. When you saw Joe was present, you knew you were in for a good discussion. (Christopher Gray, Montreal)

I would like to underscore Jan Narveson's remarks. Joe was a valued contributor to CARP and his presence will be greatly missed.

My name is Craig Gallup; I was Joe's teaching assistant during most of my Master's at Western. I think very highly of Joe, and I shall miss him and our interactions.

Joe was a frequent and very sharp contributor to discussions in a philosophical group called CARP (Canadian Association for Reductionism in Philosophy), of which I was for many years the nominal president. I know I speak for all of us when I say that we will miss him immensely. I also knew him from long before that; we had much philosophical (and some musical) interchange, and some personal visits, all of which I'll remember with pleasure. It was a shock to hear that he has gone.
