Paul,
Please accept Karen's and my condolences for the loss of your Uncle

June 1, 2010

I was terribly saddened to hear of Fr. Flanagan's sudden passing. I counted Fr. Flanagan as one of my guiding lights during my undergraduate years at Boston College (AB Philosophy and English, 1973). I was without a compass before I signed on to take his Aesthetics course during which we read Suzanne Langer (among others). His prodigious intellect was remarkably matched by a warm and compassionate soul. I do recall at one point unwittingly playing Fr. Flanagan's...

I count Fr. Flanagan among the best teachers I've had at any point in my education. I was very fortunate to study under him as an undergraduate at BC, for his course on Modernism; and my lasting interest in philosophy, education, and art has so much to do with his influence as a generous and wise person.

To John Flanagan & family:
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Father Flanagan not only was an most excellent professor of philosophy, but a great department chairman. I was fortunate enough to be a graduate student at BC under him, to teach under him, and to take classes from him. He backed me up in making some tough life decisions; I became a Catholic in part due to seeing his faith in action every day...my fondest memory tho, is that of my then 4 year old child running through his open door and his picking her up and holding her, talking with her. ...

May the angels welcome him to Paradise

i will always be grateful for Father Joe's support at a difficult transition in my life. He embodied the twofold commandment of love of God and of neighbor, besides being a faithful steward of tradition and a herald of the future. William E. Murnion (Bellvale, NY)

A brilliant mind, a loving soul, a heartfelt servant for the greater good. You live on in the lives you touched for so many years. We are better people because you were here. To Father Joe Flanagan.

God's blessings for him. With deep gratitude for his life, love and knowledge. For his teaching of Bernard Lonergan's thought and his support to foreign students.
