O'Neill Funeral Home - Cumberland Obituary

Joseph L. Fougere, 58, of Cumberland, Rhode Island passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, June 10, 2018. He was happily married to Lisa (Orfan) Fougere for 30 years and was the beloved father of Kristen and Julie Fougere. Adopted from Hong Kong, China, he was the son of Louis and Nancy (Stephenson) Fougere. He is also survived by his siblings, Sandra Cummings, Ann Musto, Michael Fougere, Katherine Gallant, James Fougere, Jeannette Watka, Amy Godeaux, and the late Stephen Fougere. Joe graduated from Bourne High School in 1977 and Western New England College in 1981. He loved playing a part in planning his high school reunions and staying connected to all of his classmates. After graduating from WNEC, Joe started what would become a successful career in Information Technology. At the time of his passing, Joe was Director of Application Support Engineering for IntraLinks. Joe touched the lives of many people in the short time he had here. Many neighbors, lacrosse volunteers, and colleagues were all proud to call him a close friend. Most Saturdays you could find Joe visiting with his friends at Don’s diner over pancakes and a “cup of joe”. One of the many ways he showed his love for friends and family was sharing memorable moments through the slideshow videos he created. The world was a made a kinder place with Joe in it and he will be greatly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Friday, June 15th at 11AM in Saint John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland RI. Visiting hours are Thursday from 5-8PM in the O’Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland RI. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations can be made to:

Hope Health of RI Attn: Philanthropy, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI, 02904, or

Roger Williams Cancer Center Attn: Charter Care Foundation, 7 Waterman Avenue, North Providence, RI, 02911.

In Joe’s words, “I truly believe some day this will be a sickness that you can recover from like a common cold."

Not sure what to say?

Joey changed my life as a child, and with his loving families help (mostly his mom), provided a safe haven for me growing as a young kid in Buzzards Bay.

Joe was the sweetest, kindest person I have ever known. He will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to Lisa, Kristen, Julie and the Fougere family.

Dear Lisa, I just learned of your husband's passing. Please know that you and your beautiful girls, and Joe's family are in my thoughts and prayers. May you be comforted by joyful memories of your time together as a family, surrounded by all those who knew and loved him. I wish you peace in your hearts.

Joey was the one brother in the Fougere family I could count on to not tease me! He always had a kind and gentle heart growing up, and its clear that continued throughout his entire life. Joe's visits with my parents, Ken and Linda Clarke, while on his paper route, are still considered some of the most special moments they had in our neighborhood. He would come by to drop off the paper and stay for an hour! Keeping his entire family in my prayers for the loss you must feel. God bless.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
