Joseph Mark Gagen, son of Robert J. and Verna Marie (Pugsley-Gagen) Laubenthal, was born October 20, 1960 in Des Moines, Iowa. Joe graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1978. Following high school, Joe served in the United States Navy from 1979 until 1981, where he was stationed in San Diego. He was honorably discharged in 1981.

Joe was united in marriage to Annette Cooksey in 1988 at Ingham Lake. To this union two children were born.

Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting and tubing on the river. He liked collecting Indian artifacts and playing card with his friends, especially Cribbage. Joe also loved diving and snorkeling.

Joe will certainly be remembered by his friends and family as a guy you could always depend on to rescue you. He liked fixing things and helping others in any way he could.

Joe owned and operated JMG Manufacturing, near Mallard, Iowa, doing custom welding and metal fabrication. He was also employed at Protein Resources until his health forced him to retire.
Joe passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at his home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 56. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Laubenthal and a nephew, Nicholas Hall.

He is survived by his children, Sarah Ann Markley of Longmont, Colorado/Emmetsburg, Iowa and Matthew Joseph Gagen of Bode, Iowa; one grandchild, Noah Louis Markley; his mother, Verna Laubenthal of Emmetsburg, Iowa; brother, John Dewayne Gagen of Terre Haute, Indiana; sister, Ann Marie Hogan of Tyrone, Georgia; two nephews, Carl Hogan and Dylan Gagen; as well as many other relatives and friends.
