Andrews Mortuary and Crematory - Market Street Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

Joseph Henry Goodman MD, of Wilmington, North Carolina was born in Durham, on October 23, 1944, to E.G. Goodman MD, and Elizabeth Zuidema Goodman. Joe passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 29, 2023, just six days after his 79th birthday. He was proceeded in death by his parents and his brother, Edward G. Goodman, as well as his sister-in-law, Jane Sexton Schelich, and brother-in-law, Ron Swaney. He is survived by his wife, Patricia his daughters, Mariah, of Durham, North Carolina, and Allison of Houston Texas, his sister, Margaret Goodman Shelton and brother-in-law, Ernest “Chuck” Shelton, of Leland, NC., sisters and brothers-in-law, James (Laurain) Sexton, DVM, Walnut Creek CA,  Charles (Robin) Sexton MD, Irvine, CA, John (Kristy) Sexton, the Woodlands, TX, William (Kathleen) Sexton, the Woodlands, TX, Cynthia Swaney, Sidney, OH, Frances (Rolf) Ozamiz, Winston-Salem, Anne (Thomas, MD) Namey, Knoxville, and Robert (Connie) Schelich, along with twenty-five much loved nieces and nephews, and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Joe graduated from New Hanover High School, class of 1963, having attended schools in Leland, Hawaii, and Oakland California due to his father’s military career. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Doctor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He completed a fellowship in pathology at UNC, then his surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He then completed a fellowship in stereotactic surgery at The London Hospital, London, England. Joe spent his medical career as a member of the neurosurgical faculty practice at OSU Medical Center, specializing in surgery for brain tumors and aneurysms, and helped initiate use of the Gamma Knife Radiosurgery program there. He also served in the medical corps of the Ohio National Guard, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He retired from medicine in 2001 and brought his family home to North Carolina, spending two years in Southport before settling in Wilmington. Here, he raised his daughters with his beloved wife of nearly 32 years and worked the family land in Brunswick County. He enjoyed traveling, and staged his active pursuit of all things outdoors, including international fly fishing and hunting with his dear friend and cousin, David Sandlin of Newnan, Georgia. He was a pilot, certified at various times to fly seven types of small aircraft, and enjoyed flying along the coastline on sunny days and meeting with his many pilot friends in Southport and Wilmington. Joe was a brilliant, humble, logical, and respectful man who had both lifelong and new friends who shared his wide range of interests.

Joe was a wise and gentle father to Mariah and Allison, a loyal and protective husband to Pat, a wonderful brother to Margaret, a sweet brother-in-law who listened well and spoke little, but profoundly, and a fascinating uncle to his many nieces and nephews. To his extended family, he was known for his dry sense of humor, great intelligence, and for his love of life and positive attitude. He was a good friend to many and was always willing to help whenever he could. He was a principled Christian man and lived his life as a kind and good example. This knowledge, for those who love him, provides us all with great comfort during this time of immense loss.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Pine Valley Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 at the church.

In honor of Joe’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to Operation Smile (https://www.operationsmile.org/) or Doctors without Borders (https://donate.doctorswithoutborders.org/)

Not sure what to say?

I just learned of Dr. Goodman's passing. I was a medical student doing a Neurosurgery elective at Ohio State in 1990. The team consisted of Drs. Goodman, Miner, Rea, and Stechison, four residents, and myself. Everyone was treated with respect. Truly one of the most cohesive teams I've worked with in my career. I enjoyed Dr. Goodman's stories of flying down to Portsmouth twice a month to conduct a neurosurgery clinic. At the time I did not appreciate how important it was to reach out to...

We just heard of this today and are profoundly sorry to learn of Joe’s passing. We’re grateful that just a few months ago they stopped in on us and we had a fine time together. Our deepest condolences to Pat, their children and to his dear sister Margaret Shelton.

Joe and my father worked together at OSU for many years. I have several memories of Joe. First, I remember walking into his old house in Ohio and seeing nicks and notches in the frame of the doorways -- apparently from where he had been shooting his bow and arrows indoors. I was about 8 or 9 years old at the time, so needless to say, I thought this was awesome... and as a grown man, I still do. Next, I remember fishing with Joe in Southport. He taught me how to tie a t-swivel knot, which I...

One of the finest friends anyone could have. Joe and I went on many adventures together over the years and our two families had many good times as well. A fellow aviator and outdoorsman to many in this area, always ready to pitch in for projects at the airport and beyond. All the best to the entire Goodman family, love you all, John Martin.

Joe and I were college roommates and med school classmates at UNC and Joe was a groomsman at my wedding.
We lost touch when he went to Ohio for at least 30 years and neither one of us recall
how we reconnected but it probably had something to do with fly fishing.
We fished together all over including Alaska and Patagonia. Got to see his cousin Dave Sandlin on some of those expeditions who I met during our college days.

Mary and I got to meet Pat and his lovely...

I have known Joe since he was a small child. My mother and his grandmother were related. As a young girl, mother and I visited the family often. So sorry I did not contact him when he retired and moved back to Wilmington. My very best to his family. I know the grief and sadness you are experiencing. The sadness never goes away—but it does get easier to accept as time passes.

oe and I did the fellowship year in pathology together. and we both went to England and Switzerland together .on a foreign fellowship. In Switzerland we did our OB rotation, travelled and skied together(in ascending order of priority). He bought a high end camera which he employed extensively in the Alps to produce gorgeous photos.. He was a quiet, introspective, good-hearted, and logical individual whose company I thoroughly enjoyed. My sincere condolences to his family and close friends...

There are so many things that could be said about Joe Goodman, and no matter what is said, it will not do justice to the man. I knew him as a junior staff man in neurosurgery at Ohio State and he became my mentor, colleague and friend. He knew what was important and what wasnt. He knew when we needed to move ahead and when we needed to back off. He could always be counted on for help no matter how much time it would take or how much energy it required. He was steadfast in his support, no...

Margaret and family. I have many happy memories of times together with your family. Our prayers go out to you and your family for strength, peace and comfort❤✝.
