Funeral Services for Mr. Joseph "J.W." Griffin, Jr. will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church with burial to follow at Magnolia Cemetery. A public viewing will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. at Mercy Funeral Home Chapel and visitation on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church located at 3755 Fannett Road Beaumont, Texas 77705.
Joseph "J.W." Griffin, Jr. was born on September 6, 1925 to the late Reverend Joseph William Griffin, Sr. and Josephine Stewart-Griffin in Voth, Texas. J. W. attended Adams Elementary School and was a 1942 graduate of Charlton-Pollard. He also graduated from Lincoln Business College in Tayloring.
He accepted Christ at an early age at Greater Rising Sun Baptist Church in Voth, Texas and then joined the Army where he was a World War II Veteran and served until discharged under the honorable condition in March of 1946. He received WWII Victory Ribbon, Theatre Ribbon and 3 Bronze service stars. He later met and married Mathilda Sinegar from Abbeville, Louisiana and to their union was born two children, Shelia and Kenneth. He was employed at U.S. Postal Service for a short period and later accepted a position at Synpol, Inc. as a warehouse clerk where he worked for thirty-six (36) years until his retirement.
During this time, he became a member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Reverend A. K. Haynes and later joined the Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mathilda Griffin and two sisters, Ethel Sebile and Rosa Wright. He departed this life and entered into his eternal life on Saturday, February 28, 2015.
J.W. leaves to cherish his memories, two children, Shelia Henderson (Jeffrey) and Kenneth Griffin both of Beaumont; seven grandchildren, Michael Walker, Jr. (Zandra), Krystal Walker, Davion, Dera, Decorian, Decadrien, and Justin Lee Griffin; six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
