I got to know Joe Hartnett while I covered Montclair for The Star-Ledger from his arrival, when he personally moved those sofas out of his new office, and subsequently in his forthright and spot-on dealings with the Montclair council. He was always accessible whenever I -- the press-- stopped by to chat unannounced. It was a privilege to know him. I recall his son had been in the Rahway High marching band, as had mine in the Clifton marching band, and after I moved to North Carolina in 2014,...

It was my privilege to cover Joe while I was managing editor of The Rahway News-Record in the early 1970s. He was a great administrator and a knowledgeable source of every facet of Rahway city government. Perhaps more importantly, he came to be a true friend. He will be sorely missed..

I was proud to be Joe's partner when he was our Town Manager and I served on the governing body of the Montclair Township Council as Ward Council Member & Mayor. I learned a lot from him about municipal government and we were both motivated by a desire to get back to basics and complete a robust list of projects.

I got to know Joe when he was Town Manager of Montclair and found him to be friendly, competent and a man of integrity. His wise guidance was of great benefit to our community. I was impressed by the beautifully written obituary and the letter from his son and extend my sincere sympathy to his family.

Dear Georgia and Colin I am so sorry for your loss.Joe and I go back many years together and wether it was basketball at the old library, drinks later at his beloved jersey devil or discussing city and school business Joe was always spot on as to what was and should be done.
